What Is PDF Splitting?

PDF splitting is the process of extracting specific pages from a PDF document to create a new, smaller file. This lets you pull out the pages you need without altering the original document. Splitting is the opposite of merging — instead of combining files, you are breaking a single PDF into parts or selecting a subset of its pages.

How to Use This Tool

Upload a PDF file by clicking the upload area or dragging the file in. The tool displays thumbnails of all pages in the document. Click on the pages you want to extract — selected pages are highlighted. You can select individual pages, a range, or any combination. Once you have made your selection, click the Split button to generate a new PDF containing only the selected pages. Download the result instantly.

Why Split PDFs?

Large PDF documents often contain more content than you need to share or work with. Splitting allows you to extract only the relevant pages — for example, pulling a single chapter from a textbook, isolating a specific invoice from a batch, or separating a cover page from the main document. Smaller files are easier to email, upload, and manage. Splitting also helps when you need to reorder or reorganize content from a larger document.

How Page Extraction Works

When you select pages to extract, the tool reads the original PDF structure in your browser's memory. It identifies the selected pages along with their associated resources — fonts, images, annotations, and formatting data. It then constructs a new PDF containing only those pages and their dependencies. The original file is not modified. All processing happens client-side using JavaScript, so your documents remain private.

Tips for Splitting Large Documents

For very large PDFs with hundreds of pages, the page thumbnails may take a moment to render. Be patient while the preview loads. If you need to extract a continuous range of pages, select the first page, then hold Shift and click the last page in the range. For non-consecutive pages, click each page individually. If your browser runs low on memory with extremely large files, try splitting the document in multiple passes, extracting a portion each time.
