What Is PDF Annotation?
PDF annotation is the process of adding markings, drawings, highlights, or notes on top of an existing PDF document. Freehand annotation allows you to draw directly on the pages using a mouse, touchscreen, or stylus, much like writing on a printed page with a pen. Annotations overlay the original content without modifying the underlying text or images, making them ideal for reviews, feedback, and markup.
How to Use This Tool
Upload a PDF file using the upload area above. The tool displays each page as an interactive canvas. Select a pen color and stroke width from the toolbar, then draw directly on any page. Use the undo button to remove the last stroke, or switch to the eraser to remove individual strokes. Navigate between pages to annotate different sections of the document. When finished, click Download to save the PDF with all your annotations embedded.
Why Annotate PDFs?
Annotation is essential for document review workflows. Teachers mark up student assignments, managers provide feedback on reports, and designers annotate mockups with revision notes. Freehand drawing is especially useful for circling important sections, drawing arrows to highlight connections, sketching corrections, and adding handwritten signatures or initials. Being able to annotate directly on a PDF eliminates the need to print, mark up, and rescan documents.
How Browser-Based Annotation Works
This tool renders each PDF page onto an HTML canvas element, creating a drawing surface layered on top of the page content. Your pen strokes are captured as vector paths and stored separately from the original page data. When you download the annotated PDF, these paths are flattened onto the page as permanent markings. The original page content remains intact underneath. All processing happens in your browser — your documents and annotations never leave your device.
Tips for Better Annotations
Use a thicker stroke width for emphasis and a thinner stroke for detailed notes. Choose high-contrast colors — red and blue stand out well on most documents. If you are using a touchscreen or tablet with a stylus, you will get smoother, more precise lines. Zoom in on sections that need detailed markup. Use the undo feature liberally — it is easier to redo a stroke than to erase precisely. For longer review sessions, annotate and download in batches to avoid losing work.
